Principe Guilherme Tapit–Aubby K, by Street Sense Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm ($600,000 purchase by Mill Valley Racing at 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale) :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Derby Watch member Principe Guilherme’s pedigree balances both sides of the coin. Principe Guilherme, who wound up back in the hands of his breeder after running through the auction ring, is by a prominent stallion who has been represented by three winners of the Belmont Stakes – America’s longest classic race – in the last four years. He’s also the first foal out of a mare who was best around one turn. Tapit, who has three times finished as North America’s leading sire, has been represented by Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist (2014), Creator (2016), and Tapwrit (2017). Tapit, who hails from 1992 Belmont winner A.P. Indy’s stamina-producing line, also was represented by runner-up Frosted (2015) and third-place finisher Lani (2016) in the 1 1/2-mile classic. Tapit’s lengthy résumé also is highlighted by Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner and champion Untapable, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and champion Hansen, and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and champion Stardom Bound. His most recent standout is champion female sprinter Unique Bella, who has successfully stretched her speed around two turns. :: The Road to the Kentucky Derby Player's Package Meanwhile, Aubby K never won beyond seven furlongs, scoring her biggest win at that distance in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff on a sloppy Churchill Downs track in 2013. She also won the Grade 2 Inside Information Stakes at the same distance at Gulfstream. She finished third in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes going a one-turn mile at Belmont. Out of Lilly Capote, who won the Grade 3 Golden Rod Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs as a juvenile, Aubby K is a half-sister to three stakes-placed runners. Those include Flying Pegasus, Grade 2-placed as a juvenile and third in the Grade 3 Risen Star at Fair Grounds the following year. In her extended family is Room Service, who finished in a dead heat for the win in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in 2014. Principe Guilherme’s broodmare sire, 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, is well represented on this year’s Derby trail. He is the sire of multiple graded stakes winners McKinzie and Avery Island. – Nicole Russo
