Local Hero

Hard Spun-Liam’s Dream, by Saint Liam

(Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm; $500,000 purchase by e Five Racing Thoroughbreds at Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of selected 2-year-olds in training)

Horse of the Year Saint Liam sired only one crop of foals before his death following a freak accident. But in that lone crop, he produced Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, and he’s also made a continued impact as a broodmare sire. Runners produced by his daughters include graded stakes winners Ahh Chocolate and Sharp Azteca, and he has another prospect knocking on the door in Louisiana Derby entrant Local Hero, third in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in his most recent outing.

Local Hero is the first winner from three starters out of Liam’s Dream, who followed the inclinations of her female family by being a good sprinter, despite Saint Liam’s stamina influence. Liam’s Dream won four of her five starts, including the Grade 3 Cicada and the Wonders Delight Stakes. She never won beyond 6 1/2 furlongs and was third in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at seven furlongs. In that, she emulated her dam, Danzig’s Dreamer, who never won beyond 6 1/2 furlongs, and a half-sister, Grade 2-placed Holdontoyourdream, who never won beyond six furlongs.

There is more middle-distance ability farther back in the family, as Local Hero’s third dam, Danzig’s Beauty, won the Grade 2 Gardenia Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and then produced multiple graded stakes winner Distorted Humor. Distorted Humor has sired a pair of classic winners in Funny Cide and Drosselmeyer. It is the extended family of standout turf mare Sweetest Chant and Canadian Horse of the Year Never Retreat.

Sire Hard Spun won the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at seven furlongs but was also a multiple graded winner around two turns and second in both the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Danzig horse’s best runners have excelled at routes on both dirt and turf, including champion Questing, Wood Memorial winner Wicked Strong, and Grade 1 winners Hard Aces, Hard Not to Like, Hardest Core, and Zo Impressive.
