Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Hansen surprising Day 1 favorite

Pool 3 update; for SATURDAY A.M. Internet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hansen was a surprise early favorite after the first full day of wagering into Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager after relatively light betting.

With Friday wagering complete, and with $64,756 in the win pool, Hansen was the 2-1 favorite, followed by Union Rags (9-2), the mutuel field (6-1), Creative Cause (12-1), and Gemologist (13-1). Another $18,732 was bet into the exacta pool. Last year, the combined Pool 3 handle was nearly $400,000.

A substantial portion of the Pool 3 handle can be expected to come in after the results of the Florida Derby are known. Four of the separately listed Pool 3 horses are in that race Saturday at Gulfstream Park: El Padrino, News Pending, Take Charge Indy, and Union Rags.

Odds are not locked in until the pool closes, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. Churchill Downs officials decided to extend their customary closing time by 30 minutes to accommodate the results of the Louisiana Derby, which is scheduled to be run at about 6 p.m. Sunday at Fair Grounds. Just one separately listed Pool 3 horse, Mark Valeski, is in the Louisiana Derby field of 14.

This is the final pool in the 2012 Future Wager. Pool 1 was held Feb. 10-12 and Pool 2 March 2-4.

Hansen, the 2-year-old champion of 2011, closed at 26-1 and 9-1 in the two earlier pools. He will not race this weekend, and his odds surely will rise from 2-1 as handle increases through the close of the pool Sunday.

Live streaming odds and exacta will-pays are available throughout the weekend on television monitors at tracks and wagering outlets and on kentuckyderby.com.

This is the 14th year Churchill has offered parimutuel futures.
