Holy Bull Stakes winner Cairo Prince had the lowest odds of any individual horse at 9-1 in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed in its familiar spot as the favorite in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Saturday following a three-day run.

The field closed at 3-1, followed by Cairo Prince (9-1), Top Billing (11-1), Honor Code (11-1), Candy Boy (12-1), Shared Belief (15-1), Bayern (17-1), Tapiture (17-1), and Strong Mandate (18-1).

Pool 3, which closed when the field left the gate in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct at 4:18 p.m. Eastern, coincided with the only Kentucky Oaks futures pool of the season, which closed with Untapable as the 5-1 favorite.

Handle on Pool 3 was $334,326, with $239,389 bet to win and $94,937 in exactas. That total represents an 18 percent decrease from the corresponding pool (Pool 2) last February, when $407,038 was bet.

The field closed as the 4-5 favorite in Pool 1 (Nov. 27-30) and the 3-2 favorite in Pool 2 (Feb. 6-8). Since parimutuel futures were first offered by Churchill Downs in 1999, the field has always closed as the favorite in Pool 1, which typically had been offered in early February. With rare exceptions, the second traditional pool (now Pool 3) in late February or early March also has had the field as the favorite.

Handle for Pool 1 was $273,174, the fifth-lowest ever. It was the first time for Churchill to offer futures at such an early date. For Pool 2, the handle of $380,249 was down 39 percent from the comparable time frame in 2013.

The lowest $2 exacta will-pay for Pool 3 is the field over Cairo Prince (24-3), worth $85.60. In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse counts toward the winning combination.

This is the first year Churchill has had four futures pools for the Derby. Last fall, Churchill moved Pool 1 into a preceding calendar year for the first time.

Historically, the futures pool held at this time of year has attracted lighter handle than those preceding and following it. The record for a comparable pool (Pool 2 in 2005) is $511,655.

Meanwhile, in the Oaks pool, which was supposed to close Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern but closed at about 4:45, Untapable and the field both closed at 5-1, followed by Unbridled Forever (8-1), Onlyforyou (9-1), Dame Dorothy (13-1), and Ria Antonia (14-1).

Oaks handle was $81,233, with $54,571 bet to win and $26,662 in exactas. That total was down 36 percent from last year, when a record $126,038 was bet into the Oaks futures.

Churchill spokesman John Asher said the earlier closing, which obviously cut off potential customers, was due to “an internal misunderstanding,” and the company regretted the mistake. One disgruntled bettor, Kim Langston, said via Twitter that she was “very disappointed in this turn of events. Only one pool for the fillies, and it gets jacked up.”

The 140th Oaks and Derby will be run May 2 and 3.

5-1 on mutual field looks very tempting.
