Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field closes as 5-1 favorite in Pool 4

Shigeki Kikkawa
San Felipe Stakes winner California Chrome closed at 9-1 in Pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field closed as the favorite yet again in Pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern following a three-day run.

The field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed at 5-1, followed by California Chrome (9-1), Cairo Prince (9-1), Social Inclusion (11-1), Candy Boy (13-1), Bayern (15-1), Hoppertunity (15-1), Tapiture (15-1), Samraat (17-1), Constitution (19-1), and Intense Holiday (20-1).

The field was favored in all three of the earlier pools, which were held Nov. 27-30, Feb. 6-8, and Feb. 27 to March 1. Perhaps part of the uncertainty on fans’ behalf is that pools were closed Saturdays, prior to major preps being run, whereas in prior years, pool closings had been held on Sundays, after horseplayers could consider the results of those preps. Churchill officials said they were seeking a “true futures” angle to the wager.

Combined handle on Pool 4 was $336,717, with $228,748 bet to win and $107,969 in exactas. That total represents a 16 percent decrease from the corresponding pool (Pool 3) last year, when $402,167 was bet.

Overall, handle slumped noticeably for the Derby futures this year, which was the first that Churchill Downs offered four pools. Aggregate handle was $1,324,466, whereas last year, with just three pools, the total was $1,430,699. The record aggregate of $1,665,990 was set in 2005.

Pool 3 handle was $334,326, down 18 percent from the corresponding period in 2013. Pool 2 handle was $380,249, down a whopping 39 percent from the corresponding period. And Pool 1 handle was $273,174, the fifth-lowest total since the futures were first offered in 1999.

The lowest exacta will-pay for Pool 4 is the combination of California Chrome over Cairo Prince (4-5), worth $98.80.

In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.

The 140th Derby will be run May 3.

We have the technology....Have 100 horses in the future bet...and you will the wagering triple. I don't want the horse I like in the future pool at 4-1....I want him at 50-1.

Wondering why one would bet the field at this point? Most of the listed horses will run if healthy. Which horses are you hoping for w the field t this time?

Really weak field of horses in this year's triple crown races.

Yet vicars in trouble with two stake wins and several good races outsped two speed horses and galloped and is 36-1

Being a Louisiana bred, does'nt get as much respect.

Constitution closed at the right price. Riddle me this. Social inclusion was 20-1, didn't run and nothing changed in regards to him and he has no points but he dropped to 11-1 as the second horse this year to not race as a 2 year old.

He's run the most impressive route race I've seen so far and his breeding says a mile and 1/4 shouldn't be a problem. That and the fact that this appears to be a rather weak crop equals 11-1. If he wins the Wood like he's won his other 2 races he'll be 3-1 on Derby day.

thanks for the pool closing before the FL Derby I have Constitution at 19-1 If they close at 8:00 the Constitution closes at maybe 5-1

A lot of speed in the Derby; odd year. A longshot closer will factor, maybe win.
Brian Mitchell RPh More than 1 year ago
If by "longshot closer" you mean post-time favorite Candy Boy, I agree..

Wildcat Red gve me 31-1! He will prove the doubters wrong and get the distance.
Joe Rockhold More than 1 year ago
He couldn't get a mile and 1/8th with soft fractions. No chance in the Derby.

Just got out-gamed by a better horse.
