Kent Breeders' Cup Preview

Delaware Park - Race 10
Kent Breeders' Cup (Grade 3)
1 1/8 Miles (Turf)
Purse $500,000.

The logical favorite in the Kent is After Market. Trained by Bill Mott, the son of Storm Cat and multiple Grade 1 turf winner Tranquility Lake has never tasted defeat after four races, and his Beyer Speed Figures are among the best in the field. His tactical speed should have him just off a fast pace that should be set by Kip Deville and Diabolical, and he could gain first run on the final turn. He's the most likely winner of the race, but won't offer much betting value.

Darley Stable has been winning just about every big race lately, and they will send out Carnera on Saturday. Carnera used to be somewhat of a head case as he had a tendency to be very rank coming out of the gate in his early races, and that bit of nervous energy seemed to sap his stretch run. In the A in Sociology Stakes last time out at Saratoga, however, Carnera rated kindly behind the early leaders before pouncing in the stretch. His recent Beyer Speed Figures compare favorably with some of the other main contenders in the Kent, and he should be running late under Eibar Coa.

Yankee Master has every reason to improve off his seasonal debut in the A in Sociology. It was his first start in almost eight months, and he was sent up to challenge a loose leader through quick middle fractions. He held well for third, and was good enough to run a 97 Beyer as a 2-year-old in his second start of the form cycle last year. Trainer Linda Rice had an excellent Saratoga meet, and her charge has never finished off the board. Expect Yankee Master to be sharper for the Kent.

Brilliant shouldn't be completely ignored. The son of Breeders' Cup Mile winner War Chant won his first three starts on turf before having a difficult trip off a layoff in the Grade 2 Hall of Fame at Saratoga last time out. His best asset is his tactical speed as he is very comfortable sitting just off the early pace. Brilliant won the Grade 2 Jefferson Cup at this distance two starts back, but will likely need a bit of a Beyer boost in order to grab the brass ring.

Kip Deville will probably draw into the body of the race as Rock Lobster may scratch after winning the Grade 3 Saranac on September 3. Kip Deville has high speed, but draws outside Diabolical, and that one seems like a need-the-lead type.

Selections (turf only):
1. Carnera
