Keltos, a futures pick, is retired

Keltos, third choice for the Breeders' Cup Mile after Pool 2 of the Breeders' Cup Future Wager on Aug. 11, has been retired.

The winner this year of the Group 2 Prix du Muguet and the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, Keltos has been suffering from a fetlock injury. His trainer, Carlos Laffon-Parias, announced the decision on Sunday after consulting with owner Gary Tanaka.

His Timeform rating of 132 for the Lockinge Stakes is the highest awarded to an older horse this year. Keltos, who will stand in either France or Ireland for a French breeder, won six of 10 lifetime starts for earnings of $279,365.

Also retired over the weekend was Chichicastenango. A 4-year-old son of Smadoun, he had tendon problems that prevented him from making it back to the races this year. The best of his four victories was a 1 1/2-length score over Mizzen Mast in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris in which he set a Longchamp track record of 2:01.00 for 1 1/4 miles.
