Kela wins the $194,000 Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup Handicap at Del Mar by 4 1/2 lengths on Sunday.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Kela swept the two graded stakes for sprinters at the Del Mar meeting with a shockingly easy win in Sunday's $194,000 , against a field that included top sprinter Pico Central.

Kela ($7.20) ran seven furlongs in 1:21.17, finishing 4 1/2 lengths in front of Domestic Dispute. Pico Central, who fought for the early lead with Taste of Paradise through fractions of 21.98 and 43.92 seconds, could only finish third, followed by Hasty Kris and Taste of Paradise. Amerindio, Disturbingthepeace and Marino Marini were scratched.

Pico Central lost for the first time since arriving from Brazil last year. He had won the San Carlos, Carter and Metropolitan handicaps earlier this year.

"He didn't want to go that kind of pace," trainer Paulo Lobo said.

Domestic Dispute made his first start since finishing sixth in the Dubai World Cup in March.

Kela had an ideal trip under jockey Tyler Baze. Last of five on the backstretch, Kela rallied three-wide on the final turn to quickly reach contention. He drew even with Pico Central in early stretch and pulled clear.

"I thought with his kick, the other horse would have to be tough to take off with my horse turning for home," said winning trainer Mike Mitchell.

The win gave Kela his third stakes win of the year, preceded by the Texas Mile at Lone Star Park in April and the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap here on July 25. Owned by Jay Manoogian, Kela has won 8 of 23 starts and $793,527. His autumn goal is the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30.
