Keeneland sets fall single-day handle record

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A record all-sources handle for a fall program at Keeneland was established Saturday when $15,926,396 was bet on the 10-race card, surpassing the previous fall record of $14,135,204 set Oct. 6, 2007.

The handle figure does not threaten the all-time single-day record at Keeneland, which was set earlier this year when more than $21.7 million was bet on the Blue Grass Stakes card of April 9. In fact, at least the top 10 single-day records at Keeneland all have come at spring meets.

Ontrack attendance Saturday was 28,101, which is shy of the fall-meet record of 32,717, set on Oct. 12, 2013. The all-time record is 40,617, set on Blue Grass Day 2012.

Ontrack handle Saturday was $1.68 million, also well short of the fall record of $2.68 million from Oct. 29, 2005.

The Saturday card was particularly strong with five graded stakes, led by the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile won by Miss Temple City.

The locals are really glad that Keenland has switched back to a dirt track. They have been wanting this for some time. This will make the Bluegrass Stakes a much better Ky. derby prep race now, and will draw a much better quality field.
