Keeneland September: Figures drop at first Book 6 session

Email

The 13-day Keeneland September yearling sale entered its final weekend with the first of two Book 6 sessions on Saturday. That session posted across-the-board declines compared with the 12th session in 2013, which was the last one of the sale.

Keeneland reported 199 yearlings sold on Saturday for total receipts of $2,625,700. The gross declined 10 percent compared with totals at last year’s final session, when 195 horses brought $2,913,200. Saturday’s average of $13,194 slipped 12 percent, compared with $14,939 in 2013, and the median declined 27 percent, from $11,000 to $8,000. The buyback rate on Saturday was 22 percent; at last year’s comparable session, it was 17 percent.

A son of first-crop sire Archarcharch sold for $110,000 to lead Saturday’s trade. Agent John Brocklebank bought the horse for Bill Peeples. The Kentucky-bred bay colt is out of Grade 3-placed Wild Forest Cat, by D’wildcat, who is a half-sister to two stakes winners, including 2014 stakes winner Here’s Johnny. The session-topper was consigned by Burleson Farms, agent for Lakland Farm.

Brocklebank’s lone purchase for Peeples made him the leading buyer on Saturday. Paramount Sales was the leading consignor, selling 19 yearlings for $248,000. Spendthrift Farm’s Archarcharch was the leading sire by gross, as seven of his yearlings brought $184,000.

Overall, 2,641 yearlings have sold through 12 sessions at Keeneland September, totaling $278,047,200. That figure is 1 percent less than the final gross from last year’s sale, when 2,744 horses sold for $280,491,300. With the added session this year, final gross receipts should draw even with 2013 figures.

The cumulative average through Saturday’s session is $105,281, 3 percent higher than last year’s final average of $102,220. The median of $52,000 is 4 percent higher than the 2013 final median of $50,000, which was a record for the sale.

The Keeneland September yearling sale concludes on Sunday with the 13th session, beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern.
