Keeneland sale's ninth day puts weanlings in spotlight

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Weanlings came to the fore Tuesday at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale’s ninth session. Prices were far lower than the seven-figure blockbusters seen in week one of the 11-day auction, but the sale continued to run well ahead of last year’s figures overall.

A $75,000 weanling Fort Prado colt who is a half-brother to multiple graded winner and track-record-setter Free Fighter led Tuesday’s session at 3 p.m. Thomas Fedro, Sr., bought the gray or roan colt from TimberView Stables. The Feb. 15 foal also is a half-brother to graded-placed stakes-winner Corrupt. The Illinois-bred’s dam is stakes-winner Taxable Deduction, by Prized.

Weanlings accounted for six of the session’s 10 highest prices at that hour.

On Monday, the eighth of 11 sessions ended Monday with gross receipts up 35 percent, the average price up 27 percent, and the median up 25 percent.

Monday’s session-topper, and that session’s only six-figure horse, was the $130,000 broodmare Onenightin Beijing. Glen Hill Farm bought the 4-year-old Indian Charlie mare, a granddaughter of Grade 1 winner Blush with Pride, one of the era’s notable producers. Her daughters include the 2007 Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, dam of Belmont winners Jazil and Rags to Riches. She also is the dam of Maryinsky, who produced a European champion in Peeping Fawn. Onenightin Beijing is a winner out of Blush with Pride’s unraced Mr. Prospector daughter Goldminess, and she is a full sister to stakes-placed Underground. She was cataloged in foal to Forestry.

The Taylor Made sales agency consigned Onenightin Beijing.

Monday’s session sold 276 horses for $5,136,400, yielding an $18,610 average and a $15,000 median.

Through Monday, the auction so far has a 48-percent increase in gross, a 49-percent jump in average, and a 22-percent upswing in median price. Cumulatively, the auction’s first eight days have sold 1,904 horses for $201,192,900, for an average price of $105,669 and a $36,500 median.

The Keeneland November sale was to continue through Thursday with sessions starting daily at 10 a.m.
