Keeneland sale: Weanlings top sellers in Book 4

Email

The trends established in the first half of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale continued to hold true as the auction moved into its Book 4 portion on Sunday, as weanlings sold well and the top of a highly selective marketplace remained strong.

A total of 256 horses sold for $7,406,700 during Sunday’s session – the first of Book 4 and the seventh of the sale overall - compared with 276 sold for $8,944,500 during the corresponding session in 2014. Eight horses sold for six figures, compared with the six to reach that mark last year.

The session’s average price, $28,932, and median, $21,000, were declines of 11 and 16 percent, respectively, from $32,408 and $25,000 in 2014. The buyback rate continued to trend upward, rising from 22 percent to 25 percent.

The session’s top three prices were garnered by weanlings, with the leader of that group being a $155,000 colt from the second crop of The Factor, purchased in partnership by George Bolton and Stonestreet Stable. Bolton campaigned multiple Grade 1 winner The Factor in partnership, and the horse now stands at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky.

The session-topping colt, consigned by Mike or Pat Freeny, is out of the Unbridled mare Wild Country, making him a half-brother to stakes-placed Ken’s Cape. Wild Country is out of multiple graded stakes winner Shawnee Country, also the dam of stakes winner North Freeway and stakes-placed Shenandoah Lady.

The session’s highest-priced mare was Flashy Ride, purchased for $110,000 by TNIP Stables. A winning daughter of Candy Ride, consigned by Kearney Park LLC, as agent, Flashy Ride was offered carrying her first foal, by leading freshman sire Uncle Mo.

Out of the stakes-winning Storm Cat mare Flashy Four, Flashy Ride is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed Savoy Special and stakes-placed Flashy Three. Flashy Four is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Good and Tough.

The Keeneland November sale continues with daily sessions through Friday.
