Keeneland offers bonuses to sellers of graded stakes winners


Keeneland has added a second incentive program for its flagship September yearling sale, expanding the number of horses eligible for a bonus to the entire catalog.

The new “Seller Bonus” program provides cash rewards to sellers of horses sold during any book of the bellwether auction who win a graded or group stakes at ages 2 or 3.

Sellers, defined as the owner of the horse at the time of the sale, would earn $10,000 for a Grade 1 or Group 1 win, $7,500 for a Grade 2 or Group 2 victory, and $5,000 for a Grade 3 or Group 3 win. A maximum of $10,000 will be paid per horse over the two-year period.

Sellers and owners of horses who win a graded stakes race in the U.S. or Canada or a group stakes in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, or the United Arab Emirates are eligible to participate. 

The Seller Bonus bolsters the auction’s Book 1 Bonus, which was announced in April. The Book 1 Bonus rewards the seller of a Book 1 graduate, and the owner at the time of the race, who wins a Grade 1 or Group 1 race in eligible countries at ages 2 or 3, with further bonuses for winning a Grade 1 race at Keeneland or the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes.

“The positive support from horsemen with regard to the Book 1 Bonus, announced in April, prompted Keeneland to fast-track the rollout of the program’s second tier, the Seller Bonus,” said Keeneland vice president of racing and sales Bob Elliston. “Based on race results from 2015 and 2016, Keeneland projects it will pay nearly $3 million in cash rewards over the program’s first two years to the sellers and owners of graduates of this year’s September sale.” 

This year’s Keeneland September sale will span 12 days, Sept. 11-23, with 4,139 yearlings cataloged. The catalog will be available online beginning Aug. 8, and print copies will be mailed the week of Aug. 21.
