Keeneland November: Stonestreet purchases R Heat Lightning for $1.6 million

Grade 1 winner R Heat Lightning became the first horse at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale to reach a seven-figure price, selling to Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings for $1.6 million on Tuesday.

The 5-year-old mare was consigned as agent by Lane’s End as part of the complete dispersal of E. Paul Robsham Stables, and entered the sale as one of the dispersal’s cornerstone offerings. She was sold in foal to Bernardini.

R Heat Lightning won four of eight career starts over two seasons of racing for earnings of $952,800. She was among North America’s leading juvenile fillies of 2010, winning the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes and finishing second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Frizette Stakes. She followed up as a 3-year-old with wins in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Oaks and Davona Dale Stakes.

"I'd seen her run a lot," said John Moynihan, who signed the ticket on behalf of Stonestreet. "She was probably one of the most talented horses I've seen come along in a long time. She was a great 2-year-old. She got injured right before the Kentucky Oaks, but I think she would have won that, too. Just an untimely injury. Todd always thought the world of her."

Bred in Florida by E Paul Robsham Stable LLC, R Heat Lightning is out of the winning Gold Fever mare Yellow Heat, whose two winners from as many foals to race also includes stakes-placed winner Hot Trip. She is from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners General Assembly, Dance to Bristol, Chief Honcho, Poet’s Voice, Versailles Treaty and George Vancouver, as well as Grade 2 winner and sire Saarland.

Immediately following R Heat Lightning through the ring was her first foal, a weanling filly by Medaglia d’Oro, who went to to Dell Ridge Farm for $250,000.
