Keeneland January Sale: Six hips to watch on Day Four
By Joe Nevills
Hip No. 1341, Tizsweet, 15-year-old mare, by Cee’s Tizzy – Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song, consigned by Lane’s End, agent for the dispersal of Fares Farm.
Hip No. 1342, a yearling colt, by Super Saver – Tizsweet, by Cee’s Tizzy, consigned by Lane’s End, agent for the dispersal of Fares Farm.
Tizsweet is a product of the extraordinary cross between Cee’s Tizzy and Cee’s Song that wrought four stakes winners, including Horse of the Year Tiznow, Grade 2 winners Budroyale and Tizdubai, and stakes winner Tizbud. The family has produced in the sales ring and the breeding shed, and Tizsweet is no different, highlighted by Awesome Spirit, who brought $500,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale. The mare herself has sold twice as a broodmare, commanding $200,000 in 2003, and $170,000 in 2008. She sells in foal to Gio Ponti, and her yearling colt by Super Saver will sell as an offering to follow.
Hip No. 1368, Wesley’s Aunts, 4-year-old filly, by Montbrook – Catch the Ghost, by Silver Ghost, consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent for Cynthia Howard.
A filly whose second dam is 2005 Broodmare of the Year Baby Zip, producer of Horse of the Year Ghostzapper and Grade 1 winner City Zip, both notable sires, as well as Grade 3 winner City Wolf. Wesley’s Aunts will sell as a broodmare prospect and is out of winning Silver Ghost mare Catch The Ghost, who has produced four winners from seven to race, including stakes winner Phantom Income. While Wesley’s Aunts will be the first broodmare prospect to sell out of her dam, Catch the Ghost’s yearlings and 2-year-olds have each sold for an average price above six figures.
Hip No. 1467, Delightfully So, 3-year-old filly, by Indian Charlie – Deputy’s Delight, by French Deputy, consigned by Lane’s End, agent for the dispersal of Fares Farm.
A half-sister to Canadian champion Delightful Mary and Grade 2 winner Delightful Kiss, who sells as a racing or broodmare prospect. She is out of the winning French Deputy mare Deputy’s Delight, a producer of six winners from seven to race, who sold earlier in the sale for $140,000. A yearling filly by Tiznow out of Deputy’s Delight also sold in the January sale for $175,000.
Hip No. 1511, Recapturetheglory, 8-year-old horse, by Cherokee Run – Cold Awakening, by Dehere, consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
Readers may remember this racing or stallion prospect from his presence on the 2008 Kentucky Derby trail, where he eventually finished 11th in the classic race. After that, he became a blue-collar campaigner in the Midwest and Louisiana, winning six of 26 starts in six seasons of racing for earnings of $550,706. His biggest wins came in the Grade 2 Illinois Derby in 2008 and the 2011 Louisiana Handicap.
Hip No. 1520, Teeth of the Dog, 4-year-old colt, by Bluegrass Cat – Deputy Reality, by Deputy Minister, consigned by Burleson Farms, agent.
A quality 3-year-old in 2012, Teeth of the Dog was on the Triple Crown trail, culminating with a third place finish in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and a fifth place finish in the Preakness Stakes. He then regrouped in New York, winning the Easy Goer Stakes and the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes over the summer. Selling Thursday as a stallion prospect only, Teeth of the Dog retired with three wins from nine starts for earnings of $414,950.
