Keeneland: Gary Stevens to ride in Kentucky

Email

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will be among the many top riders competing throughout Keeneland and into Kentucky Derby week at Churchill. His agent, Craig O’Bryan, said this week that Stevens will return to Kentucky after riding next weekend in Dubai.

Stevens, 50, retired from the saddle in November 2005, with his last ride coming at Churchill. He came out of retirement to great fanfare in January at Santa Anita and has a 12-for-83 record since returning.

Turcotte film premiere Derby week

A Canadian documentary detailing the life and career of Ron Turcotte, the jockey who rode Secretariat to win the 1973 Triple Crown, will have its world premiere at the Baxter Theatre in Louisville on May 2, the Thursday before the Derby.

More information on the film, “Secretariat’s Jockey, Ron Turcotte,” is available at Secretariat.com.

Gary Stevens looks to me like the same rider he was in the 90's, so i disagree with RockaFelter's comments, i just think that if he sticks to riding quality mounts kinda like Mike Smith does then he probably has another 5 years in him at least

who cares seriously ..he is 53 and although he is a HOF his best days are far behind..hope he stays safe..but he isn't a top 40 rider at this point

he will get mounts bc of his business side NOT because of his skills at this current time..

I agree, limit your mounts and stay healthy...don't be riding any Nags

I would love to see Gary $ on Vyjack through the TC races!

Vyjack has no shot in any of the races..save you $$$$$$$

sounds great for Gary, but he has a wife, 3 kids and a baby (less than 1 yr) at home, not a real considerate decision
Kevin Savage More than 1 year ago
What's that mean , he can't do what he loves??

As someone who grew up with Gary in Idaho, I can tell you he has 4 kids with his ex-wife (they are all grown up) and Gary just became a Grandpa for the first time. He has one child with his present wife, Angie, and Madison is 3-years-old. Just wanted to correct some inconsistent statements that really have nothing to do with his riding ability at all. He's as good at 50 as he was at 30 in my estimation.

Or, if Pletcher gives Castallano his choice and that's Verrazano, and JV ops for Vyjack, that would make Orb available for Gary - and a fourth Derby.
Kevin Savage More than 1 year ago
why would JV opt for Vyjack, you don't think Orb isn't top 3 for the derby??
Sam More than 1 year ago
I hope Gary gets a good mount in the Derby. One would be Tiz A Minister.

Agree 100% !!!!!!!

Good move Gary, looking forward to watching you compete with the best in the east at Keeneland.
