Keeneland cools off some

Prices at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale finally returned to earth Wednesday, its next-to-last day, but even this late in the 11-day auction the market showed it could still flare for a horse buyers liked.

The auction's 10th session posted a top price of $85,000 for a weanling Horse Chestnut colt out of the Storm Cat mare Dr. Redoubtable. M.P. K. Ltd. was the buyer. F. Gill Aulick's Cedar Point Farm, acting as agent for J. Phillip Mote, consigned the colt.

The session sold 237 horses for $2,120,500, up from last year's gross of $1,320,300 for 170 horses. The average price was $8,947, up 15 percent from last year, but the median slipped for the first time, falling 10 percent from $5,000 to $4,500.

Tuesday's ninth session sold 255 horses for $4,113,600, well above last year's total of $3,269,800 for 266 lots. The 2003 day-nine average of $16,132 was up 31 percent from last year's, and the $11,000 median climbed 57 percent.
