Keeneland catalogs 4,146 for 2015 September yearling sale

The 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale will feature a catalog of 4,164 offerings, keeping consistent with the size of last year’s edition.

The 12-day bellwether yearling sale will be held Sept. 14-26, and will feature a new format for the coming renewal, condensing Book 1 from four days to three.

Book 1, which comprises 724 cataloged entries, will take place Sept. 14-16, beginning each day at 11 a.m. Eastern. The auction’s traditional dark day will take place a day earlier than usual, on Thursday, Sept. 17, followed by Books 2-6 for the remainder of the sale, each starting at 10 a.m.

The catalog will be made available online beginning Tuesday, Aug. 11, while print catalogs will be mailed the week of Aug. 24.

The catalog is a miniscule 0.4 percent smaller than the 2014 Keeneland September sale, when 4,181 yearlings were entered.

Of the yearlings cataloged in this year’s renewal, 2,168 are colts, 1,995 are fillies, and one is a gelding.

Among the entries are five yearlings from the first crop of undefeated European champion Frankel, making Keeneland September the only U.S.-based sales company to offer yearlings by the English-based sire this year.

“We are delighted to have yearlings by Frankel in the September Sale,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell said. “The presence of his yearlings and those by other highly prized international sires reflects the fact that U.S. breeders have traveled overseas to buy mares in foal to these stallions or breed mares to these stallions with the intent of selling the resulting offspring at Keeneland.”

In total, 249 stallions are represented with yearlings in the catalog. Among those represented by their first crops are Algorithms, Astrology, Biondetti, Bodemeister, Creative Cause, Dialed In, Dominus, Excelebration, Frankel, Gemologist, Jersey Town, Maclean’s Music, Mission Impazible, Nathaniel, Power, Sepoy, Shackleford, Tapizar, The Factor, To Honor and Serve and Union Rags.

International sires with yearlings in the catalog include Dansili, Nathaniel, Pivotal, Royal Applause and Sepoy from England; Myboycharlie and Redoute’s Choice from France; and, from Ireland, Dream Ahead, Excelebration, Fastnet Rock, Galileo, High Chaparral, Invincible Spirit, Lawman, Lope de Vega, Mastercraftsman, Power, Raven’s Pass, So You Think and Teofilo.
