Keeneland catalogs 1,796 for 2016 January sale

The catalog for the 2016 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale will feature 1,796 offerings over five sessions, expanding from the previous year’s renewal in both size and duration.

The auction will be held Jan. 11-15 at Keeneland’s Lexington, Ky., sales pavilion, with sessions beginning each day at 10 a.m. Eastern. The sale features a 11.6 percent increase in entries and an additional day of selling from last year, when 1,610 horses were cataloged over four days.

Horses on offer for the sale include 624 broodmares (in foal to 168 stallions), 181 broodmare prospects, 729 newly-turned yearlings (by 191 stallions), 251 horses of racing age, and 11 stallions or stallion prospects.

The catalog will be available online Tuesday, Dec. 8, while print catalogs are to be mailed the week of Dec. 21.

“The January sale is noted for high-quality broodmare prospects and short yearlings, and it gives breeders some final opportunities to obtain stock as breeding season nears,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell said. “We look for the upcoming sale to be a solid auction that continues the strengths of the market seen during the November breeding stock sale.”

Featured in the auction are two dispersals: the dispersal of the estate of Eric A. Delvalle, consigned as agent by Brandywine Farms, and the dispersal of the estate of Sarah J. Leigh, handled by Denali Stud as agent.

The sale will be streamed on www.keeneland.com.
