Keeneland Babies for April 22

Email

Welcome to Keeneland Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.  It won't be easy with limited form on display, but let's hope for a tidy profit.

Friday result  KEEPING MY FOCUS finished sixth

Week 1 Recap:
I zigged when I should have zagged.  I went with the Wesley Ward baby on Opening Day and Steve Asmussen found the winner's circle.  The next day, I went with Asmussen and Ward scored.

Week 2 Recap:
This wasn't a question of zigging and zagging.  This was a week of atrocious handicapping.  I would hope that things will only get better.

Week 3 recap:
Things didn't get better.  In fact, they got worse.  None of the selections even got a sniff during the week.  It's humiliating and I'm staring a donut in the face for the meet.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 6-0-2 (-$18)

Analysis:
NACHO MAN finished evenly along the inside on Opening Day and galloped out well after the fact.  He can move forward off that effort and may factor at a nice mutuel with more aggressive early handling.
SWEET WILLIAM finished .25 lengths ahead of Nacho Man when the beaten favorite on April 2.  Like many Wesley Ward-trained juveniles, he showed good early speed, but faced heavy pressure going into the turn, and he hopped back to his wrong lead in the final sixteenth of a mile.  He figures to be on the engine once again barring an ultra-quick debuter.
BLUE RIGHT BY reportedly scratched out of one of the historic Aiken Trial events earlier this spring.  We've already seen a pair of Dogwood-owned juveniles win first-out at this meet after wintering in South Carolina and this colt is by a promising first-crop sire.  Blue Right By cost $140,000 last year, but trainer Dallas Stewart generally does better second-time out than with firsters.
CASPER'S TOUCH looks like an interesting prospect for trainer Ken McPeek.  The dam, Lizzy Cool, won the Ruthless Stakes going six furlongs over the Aqueduct inner track, and she has already foaled the synthetic specialist, Fatal Bullet.  That gelding won first-out at Woodbine and reeled off six triple-digit Beyers on synthetics including a 107 when the runner-up in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Sprint.  GRASS AFFAIR is by an excellent debut sire and is a half-brother to Stylish Yankee, a sprint winner that improved as the distances got longer.  DOUBLE JIGGER boasts a classy pedigree being by Hennessy out of a full sister to champion Flawlessly.  He may want a bit more ground and was a vet scratch here on April 15.  CHANGING THE RULES goes out for the dangerous Steve Asmussen barn.  The sire has done well with debuting juveniles, but this one's presumed workmates failed to find the winner's circle earlier in the meet.  SATURDAY HERO shows some quick workouts for his debut and the dam, a juvenile debut winner herself, was stakes-placed going short at Finger Lakes.  The barn has sent out some live youngsters at the meet.  METROPOLITAN MAN wouldn't be a surprise as the other half of the Wesley Ward-trained entry.  He shows a pair of bullet works but must break cleanly from the inside draw.  POWHATAN COUNTY was bought back for $85,000 earlier this year.  He shows a quick gate drill over the surface and George Weaver has already sent out a juvenile debut winner at the meet.  SCORCERER and LE BON TON ROULE both found tough spots.
