Keeneland Babies for April 15

Email

Welcome to Keeneland Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.  It won't be easy with limited form on display, but let's hope for a tidy profit.

Friday's result:  ATLANTIC BEACH finished sixth

Week 1 Recap:
I zigged when I should have zagged.  I went with the Wesley Ward baby on Opening Day and Steve Asmussen found the winner's circle.  The next day, I went with Asmussen and Ward scored.

Week 2 Recap:
This wasn't a question of zigging and zagging.  This was a week of atrocious handicapping.  I would hope that things will only get better.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 4-0-2 (-$14)

Race 1
4 1/2 Furlongs (Polytrack)
Maiden Special Weight
2-year-olds
Purse $50,000

Analysis:
CHIPSHOT is by a sire that sent out 15 debut winners in 2009 and the dam, a juvenile debut winner, popped a 99 Beyer Speed Figure when winning the U Can Do It Handicap going 6 1/2 furlongs at Calder.  This jockey/trainer combination sent out juvenile debut winner Wetzel earlier in the meeting.
MATT'S MAMMAJAMMER comes from the same connections as Let's Heir, a juvenile debut winner at 21-1 here on April 9.  The April 5 gate workout at Churchill Downs matches up with Let's Heir and the dam has already thrown blacktype earner Shiloh Bound, a winner of his first three lifetime races.
TOY is the first starter by With Distinction, a runner that earned seven triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in his career.  The second dam, Stacie's Toy, was a multiple stakes-winner.
DOUBLE JIGGER has a fascinating pedigree as he's by Hennessy out of a full sister to the great turf mare Flawlessly.  He must break alertly from the inside post and one has to wonder if he'll want more ground.  LOU BRISSIE finished second in the Von Stade Trophy at the historic Aiken Trials on March 13, and we've already seen a Dogwood-owned, Aiken Trial graduate win at this meet.  Trainer Neil Howard isn't known for his first-out prowess.  The Wesley Ward-trained entry of NO MORE YOGI'S and METROPOLITAN MAN both deserve respect.  The former, a filly, is bred both sides for speed while Metropolitan Man seems to have been working slightly faster than his mate in the mornings.  SIR SHAUN is the first starter for the versatile Sir Shackleton, a Miswaki colt that earned 10 triple-digit Beyers in his career.

Selections:
1.  Chipshot
2.  Matt's Mammajammer
3.  Toy

The Play:
Chipshot to Win at 2-1 odds or greater (#3)
