Keeneland Babies for 10/28

Email

Welcome to Keeneland Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.  Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Sunday's results:
Race 2:  Luckylead finished third
Race 7:  Starlite Starbrite scratched; second choice Donna Getyourgun finished first

Week 1 Recap:  8-1-2 (+ $19.00)
The horrible handicapping carried over from the final week of "Spa Babies," but Noble's Promise's win at 12-1 in the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity has us in the black for the time being.  One win does not a meet make, however, so we have tons of work still to do.

Week 2 Recap:  11-2-5 (- $0.20)
First-time starter Fist of Rage kept us in the game for Week 2, but a tough beat in the Jessamine Stakes was tough to swallow.  Selection Upperline also won, but was under the price we demanded.

Week 3 Recap:  14-4-10 (- $19.60)
What a frustrating week.  Even with Protesting ($12.00) getting to the winner's circle, there were too many tough defeats.  Several of the top selections had the lead in the final quarter-mile only to find one or two better come crunch time.  The handicapping wasn't bad, but the betting strategy was hideous.

Down 80 cents going into the final week of the meet.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager):  33-7-17 (- $0.80)

Analysis:
RED SCAMP worked hard in the early stages of the faster division of maiden special weights for juveniles at Arlington on September 13, and that race has produced some promising runners.  The winner came back to run second in an entry-level allowance race at Keeneland with an 82 Beyer while both the runner-up and third-place finisher returned to graduate (former earned a 93 Beyer here at Keeneland).  Sea Scamp drops into a maiden claimer, and should be a strong pace factor for barn that's having a nice meet.
GENTLEMAN JOHN only finished 2 1/2 lengths behind eventual Dixiana Breeders' Futurity winner Nobles Promise on Ellis Park sod, but the son of Matty G faltered in his next two synthetic starts.  He is pretty quick from the gate, and this barn does very well dropping horses out of the special weight ranks (10-39, 26%, $5.07 ROI over the past five years).  He should move forward considering the class relief.
LOVE CONNECTION is capable of working out a good outside stalking trip under Cisco Torres.  The two horses that returned from the maiden special at Presque Isle Downs ran 1-2 in a slow maiden special weight at Thistledown on October 13.  Presque Isle shippers have done well at this meet.
VLAD THE IMPAILER was reportedly no match for La Gran Bailadora during the October 7 work, and that juvenile filly returned to finish eleventh against special weight company on Sunday.  The Keeneland Clockers Report also mentioned that he "held a slight edge over Glittermans Cartel in a good effort" on October 14.  Glittermans Cartel is a three-year-old that ran off-the-board against allowance company on October 23.  The inside post may be a hindrance.
BREWER "was not extended, better of workmate Harpoon Hattie," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 20.  Harpoon Hattie is a maiden juvenile filly with a 53 Beyer top.  It's too early to give up on Brewer considering his connections, and the addition of Lasix should help immensely.  The runner-up of the debut try returned to graduate here for a $50,000 tag while the winner came back ran second in a starter allowance with an 81 Beyer.  FULL FORCE failed to attract much attention when a $1,000 yearling buyback.  He's been in steady training since late June, the workouts fail to entice, and this barn usually does better with second-time starters.  SPECIAL NEEDS adds Lasix after finishing well behind Love Connection at Presque Isle Downs.  BOURBON BARREL and PAPAW BROUGHTON sold for $70,000 and $120,000 respectively as yearlings, are by sires that have struggled with their initial crop of debut runners, and are entered for only $40,000 today.  PIED PIPER was reportedly no match for Rum N Ting during the October 16 workout.  That colt ran sixth in his career debut for a $30,000 tag on October 21.  CHOCHO JR. doesn't show a published workout in 25 days.  BE RICH may want more distance.

Analysis:
FLEXTHEGOLDENPIPES has faced some solid juvenile performers (Enumerate, Dublin, Discreetly Mine, Super Saver, Rule) on dirt, and now drops a notch while adding blinkers for his second start of the form cycle. He "went nicely under rider control," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 21, and can work out a good stalking trip under Julien Leparoux.
PETECAROL earned some blacktype when second in the Maryland Millon Nursery on September 26, but the son of Not For Love still seems green, and hasn't gained ground from the stretch call to the wire in his last three races.  He was no match for the even-money winner in the Nursery, and the last-place finisher that afternoon returned to graduate in a maiden special weight at Delaware with an 81 Beyer.  He looks like the main threat as he drops for a barn that has sent out juvenile winners in bunches at the meet.  According to the Keeneland clocker for October 21, Petecarol "went well with plenty in reserve."  Expect him to be close by when they turn for home.
MONTE picked up some tired runners after showing virtually no interest in the first quarter-mile of his career debut at Arlington.  He adds blinkers, and the new eye-wear may help him focus better on the task at hand today.  He exits the quick American Lion race that produced Red Scamp (the selection in today's opener).  Monte reportedly worked in company with Whitley on October 2, and that four-year-old came back to finish fourth in an entry-level allowance here on October 23 (80 Beyer).
SCREENPLAY shows some interesting workouts leading up to his career debut, and isn't the worst longshot stab in the world.  His sire has been very hot with first-time starters in 2009. He worked "in company with Lydias Smile and clearly better at the finish," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 18.  Lydias Smile is a three-year-old filly with a 69 Beyer top on turf.  Six days earlier, he reportedly "broke 3-4 lengths behind Lydias Smile, 2 lengths clear at the finish, Graham up."
FREEDOM FUTURE has been working steadily since late July for his career debut.  He reportedly worked behind unraced juvenile filly Lover's Envoy on October 13.
DOUBLES PARTNER is bred to the nines, but it looks like Mr. Pletcher has already given up on him with the drop into maiden claiming company.  He showed improved speed in the slop last time out at Belmont, and the runner-up that day returned to graduate with a 61 Beyer.  Double Partner "went easily" over the polytrack, according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 15, and should show good speed under Kent Desormeaux.  ONELITTLEINDIANBOY makes first start for a tag after tiring going two turns at Delaware Park.  He had to go very fast in the early stages that day, and is capable of some improvement here.  PLEASANT PRINCE removes the shades after chasing next-out winner Trickle Trickle (48 Beyer in entry-level allowance at Monmouth) at the Spa.  He reportedly went in company with Shore Do on October 24, "these two went sharply as a team."  Shore Do is a four-year-old with an 86 Beyer top.  ALMOST SUMMER ads blinkers after a dull try at Turfway Park.  The winner of that race returned to finish fourth in the Grade 3 Bourbon on grass.  MAGIC BULLET exits a key race at Saratoga, but this barn has been cold at the meet.  BLUEGRASS CORREDOR and SILVER FLIGHT both show spotty work tabs.  The former gave a "very strong effort, galloped out in 1:00," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 23.

Analysis:
SCREEN LEGEND was simply overmatched in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades over the polytrack 19 days ago, but finds an interesting spot for her turf debut.  A half-sister to Original Fate, a turf winner in Japan, Screen Legend finished ahead of morning line favorite Orchestrator when graduating in a one-turn mile over Arlington's polytrack.
SUZANNE adds blinkers after a dull performance around two turns on dirt in the Blue Hen Stakes at Delaware.  She finished behind Screen Legend two back over polytrack in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie, but that was a quick race, and her dam has already foaled a grass winner.  She worked "under a nice hold, galloped out in 1:00," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 18.
ORCHESTRATOR draws a cozy inside post, and can work out a nice ground-saving, pace-tracking trip under Robby Albarado.  She made a sharp bid to win her maiden going two turns over the polytrack, and just missed behind stakes-class Zilva on grass at Saratoga two back.
ZIPPER ZAPPER's last start on grass resulted in her maiden score at Ellis Park, and she has been competitive going short on the polytrack in her last two races.  She should appreciate stretching back out around two turns, and looks like an interesting longshot. She worked "easily," according to the Keeneland Clocker Report for October 24.
CHECK THE LABEL was unlucky when the Junior Champion Stakes was washed off the turf at Monmouth on August 29.  The daughter of Stormin Fever won her lone turf start to date, and she had that Colonial Downs maiden group stretched out behind her.  Expect a solid showing switching to Leparoux.  MARTITA SANGRITA has strong turf breeding, and she lived up to the pedigree when beating maidens on the lawn in New Jersey.  These seem a bit tougher.  AVY BABY's lone win came for a $30,000 tag on the grass at Arlington. SPARKY'S DREAM rode an outside, closer's bias to victory at Turfway.  CAT BELLS steps up and stretches out.  She reportedly worked in company with Comedero on October 22.  That juvenile gelding is 2-2 on the main track at Louisiana Downs.
