Keeneland Babies for 10/21

Email

Welcome to Keeneland Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.  Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Sunday's results:
Race 9:  EXXEL finished third

Week 1 Recap:  8-1-2 (+ $19.00)

The horrible handicapping carried over from the final week of "Spa Babies," but Noble's Promise's win at 12-1 in the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity has us in the black for the time being.  One win does not a meet make, however, so we have tons of work still to do.

Week 2 Recap:  11-2-5 (- $0.20)

First-time starter Fist of Rage kept us in the game for Week 2, but a tough beat in the Jessamine Stakes was tough to swallow.  Selection Upperline won, but was under the price we demanded.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager):  19-3-7 (+ $18.80)

Analysis:
PATTI'S KITTEN is a half-brother to Dawn of War, the winner of the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at two over the old dirt surface at Keeneland.  The $35,000 yearling buyback attracts Julien Leparoux, and shows a string of long workouts leading up to his career debut.  This barn loves to win at Keeneland.
HOOTEN TOWN HILL showed dramatic improvement in first start over the main track, but that was over a dirt surface at Ellis Park, and he'll have to switch to synthetic this afternoon.  That maiden claimer at Ellis produced a pair of next-out winners including D'clever Cat, who won a $25,000 'n2L' race at Hawthorne with a 67 Beyer Speed Figure.  Hooten Town Hill gets a major rider switch from seven-pound bug to Robby Albarado.
HAITIAN HERO wheels back on short notice after contesting a slow pace going two turns against better.  There doesn't appear to be much pace in this sprint so expect Haitian Hero to be involved in the early proceedings once more.
VENICE BEACH returns on only two weeks rest after an even performance around two turns at Turfway Park. This will be his first sprint effort, and his sire was a prolific one-turn runner in New York.  The rider switch to Borel looks solid, and improvement is expected.
ROCKIN' ROCKSTAR has some angles in his favor as he goes turf-to-synthetic, and adds blinkers for his second start.  He finished ahead of two of today's opponents in that race, and may show improved early speed.  FINAL ENDING drops from a maiden special weight on turf that produced next-out winners Bridgetown (Grade 3 Summer Stakes on Woodbine sod with 82 Beyer) and Billions Boy (maiden winner on grass at Saratoga with 79).  He shows a bullet work over the main track, and gives the entry plenty of depth.  SHOW TRIAL passed tired horses in his career debut at Turfway.  He took some money that day, and goes out for solid connections.  TALK TO NICK faltered in career debut on soft turf at Kentucky Downs, and may be among the pacesetters here.  SEEKING THE ORANGE finished behind Show Trial at Turfway Park.  MAX THE KNIFE didn't do much against special weight rivals at Turfway, and now draws a tough inside post.  DONIPHON raced very greenly in his debut, and needs a good deal of improvement to threaten the top contenders.  RUM N TING goes out for good barn, and the sire does well with first-time starters.  The October 16 workout caught the eye of the Keeneland Clocker as Rum N Ting was "behind Pied Piper and Black Patch at the start, came inside at the quarter pole, and was clear at the finish."  Both of those runners are unraced juveniles.

Analysis:
FLOWERING MESA needn't be a star to win this $40,000 maiden claimer, but she'll have to break well from the inside post to avoid an early shuffle.  This barn is having an excellent meet, and the daughter of Sky Mesa has some speed in the bloodlines.  She's been training regularly over polytrack since early August.
J J GULCH adds blinkers and drops into a maiden claimer for the first time after a very dull effort going two turns at Turfway Park.  She wasn't disgraced in her previous two tries on grass, may show improved speed with the blinkers, and should really appreciate the class relief.
BRAIN TRUST also adds blinkers after an even try against winners in a little statebred stakes going two turns at Thistledown.  A beaten favorite two back at Mountaineer Park, Brain Trust "broke sharply and continued on in a strong effort," according to the Keeneland Clocker's Report for October 21.  Expect her to be close to the pace as she makes her first start in a maiden claimer
NEGRIL is a $42,000 buyback that debuts for solid connections.  The dam won the Cassidy Stakes for juvenile fillies going this distance at Calder in 2002 with a 72 Beyer.
MY LADY A.P. receives Lasix for the first time, and that may move her up a couple of lengths.  She made up some ground sprinting over Woodbine's polytrack when the beaten favorite on October 2.  SHE'SATHINK'N got caught up in a speed duel as the 7-10 favorite against special weight competition at Mountaineer before faltering late.  The winner of that race returned to run second in a 'n2L' allowance with a 52 Beyer.  She'sathink'n makes the second start off the layoff, and is another that could be a forward factor turning for home.  She seems well-spotted at this class level.  ONE LAST NITEMARE must improve off her debut at Turfway.  INVOLVED's trainer, Ken McPeek, has had a great meet with his juveniles.  The Clocker Report for October 14 notes that Involved worked "easily as a team" with Sparky's Dream, a juvenile filly that won her maiden at Turfway on October 3 with a 62 Beyer.  Involved was "tardy from the break," but still finished the better of Yay Go Me and Mort's Legacy, according to the October 1 report.  Yay Go Me didn't run very well here earlier in the meet, and Involved will likely need to break cleanly to win this.  SHEER BEAUTY is by a poor debut sire, and the works fail to excite.  BABY BOPP shows several gaps in the worktab while THREE SISSIES doesn't show a published workout in the past three weeks.
