Analysis:
A lot of well-bred disappointments in this maiden claimer to begin the Thursday card. SOUTHERN CAUSEWAY is one of two strong contenders trained by Ken McPeek.  He raced evenly in his first start over polytrack, and was flattered somewhat when the winner returned to finish second at 57-1 odds in the Grade 3 Bourbon here on turf.  Southern Causeway may have been aided a bit by the usual outside closers bias at Turfway, but the drop in class figures to have him involved at the finish
INTERNALACCOUNTING was no match for a runaway debut winner at Arlington Park.  By Breeders' Cup Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect, he should appreciate the added distance, but trainer Hugh Robertson is only 1-31 over the past two years with juvenile performers.
HAKAMIAH may be one of the runners to catch as he broke quickly in his initial route start, and contested the pace before faltering late.  This will be his first run around two turns, but that last race has already produced two next-out winners, and three next-out runner-ups.  The Came Home colt seems to be on the improve, and could be forwardly-placed when the field turns for home.  He reportedly was no match for juvenile filly stablemate So Very Happy during the October 8 drill.
BULLETPROOF SPIRIT is another McPeek colt that can contend for win honors.  Two back, he was involved in a solid three-ply pace duel while in between rivals, and he battled it out all the way to the wire to only lose by 1 3/4 lengths.  The blinkers come off after a disappointing outing on dirt, but he shows a pair of five-furlong breezes in preparation for this, drops in for a tag for the first time, and seems to have some tactical speed.  The far outside post is a concern given the short run to the first turn.
CONSULATE and ONELIFEISNOTENOUGH both exit the same maiden special weight contested over soft turf at Kentucky Downs, and both were beaten twenty lengths.  The latter was favored in that race, and may improve as a half to Munnings.  Consulate goes out for a barn that does very well when dropping horses into the maiden claiming ranks.  DIXIE CAUSEWAY finished behind Internalaccounting when the beaten favorite at Arlington Park, and reportedly failed to get the better of unraced juvenile filly stablemate Pirate Party during the October 11 workout. Going with stablemate Sweet N Sour Nina (the winner of Wednesday's second race), Dixie Causeway was reportedly no match for older stablemate Prytania on October 5  STRAIGHT TALK raced greenly when a rallying fourth against maiden special weights on turf at Saratoga.  He then didn't have an easy trip as the chalk on the Spa's main track.  This barn is very dangerous.  HAITIAN HERO and TEETEE'S TAPIT were both beaten double-digits when facing each other at Kentucky Downs, and must improve here.  JASONFRANKNBILL took on a promising youngster in his debut, and finished just behind Fish, the longshot winner of Wednesday's fourth race.  DIAMOND LORD will make his career debut, and there is a bit of pedigree behind him.  The dam earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Spicy Living Handicap at nine furlongs on the grass at Rockingham Park, and she has already foaled Pulpit Talk, a multiple stakes-placed performer on the grass.  It's a tall task for a baby to debut in a route race, but Diamond Lord should save valuable ground after breaking from the inside post.

Selections:
1.  Southern Causeway  2.  Internalaccounting  3.  Hakamiah

The Play:
Southern Causeway to Win at 3-1 odds or greater

Analysis:
CORAL CANYON broke slowly over a sloppy track at Delaware, and only could pick up a few tired horses in the stretch.  That was a solid race as the runner-up returned to graduate in the Blue Hen Stakes with a 78 Beyer Speed Figure.  Coral Canyon is mired down inside, but shows some nice works over synthetics, and is taken to improve at a price for Michael Matz.
NOVEMBER is a half-brother to The Cliff's Edge, who won the Grade 1 Blue Grass over Keeneland's old dirt surface with a 111 Beyer.  November shows some nice workouts over the Greentree synthetic course, but trainer Eoin Harty has struggled with his debut runners in 2009.  Still, expect a good showing from this well-bred Darley filly.
RAPID RACER adds Lasix for her second lifetime start, and that's often a powerful angle in maiden races.  She encountered a good amount of trouble in her career debut over Arlington's polytrack, and two of her rivals that day have already returned to win.  Rapid Racer may work out a nice outside stalking trip under Kent Desormeaux, and looms a strong contender.  She reportedly didn't finish as well as maiden stablemate Worldly at the tail end of the October 4 workout.
BONITA DONITA took money for her debut at Saratoga, but she had the misfortune to tackle Touching Beauty, the next-out runnerup in the Grade 2 Matron Stakes.  Bonita Donita shows some quick workouts for this, and Ken McPeek is having a fine meet.
HUNT FOR CANDIE disappointed as the 3-10 favorite at Presque Isle Downs, but she'll receive Lasix for the first time, and may be the main speed under Cisco Torres.  SYLVAN SAINT is bred for speed on both sides of the pedigree, and the barn has done well with first-time starters in 2009.  CONNIE AND MICHAEL has been working long at Churchill Downs for McPeek, but may want a bit more ground down the road.  YAN YAN has been in steady training since early July for Rusty Arnold.  BULL ALLEY may attempt to pressure Hunt for Candie down the backstretch.  A. B. BLACKER "was just galloping at the finish, in company with Surely Bird," according to the Keeneland Clocker report for the October 6 workout.  Surely Bird earned a 41 Beyer in her debut here on October 11.  KLEA goes out for barn that usually gives their charges a race or two before they show their best.  QUEENS DESTINY may need weaker.

Selections:
1.  Coral Canyon  2.  November  3.  Rapid Racer

The Play:
Coral Canyon to Win and Place at 8-1 odds or greater

Analysis:
SMART SEATTLE made a good run to poke a head in front turning for home in the P. G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga, but she was rebuffed during the stretch drive by Tapitsfly, a filly that rode soft fractions on the lead.  Although Smart Seattle looked tired in the final sixteenth of a mile, it's possible she'll move forward off that start, her first around two turns.  There should be plenty of pace for her to attack this afternoon, and the Smart Strike filly could prove a handful in the stretch.
HOUSE OF GRACE exploded through the stretch to win her maiden by a wide margin going this distance at Saratoga.  Two horses returned from that race to graduate, and the runner-up finished third behind Smart Seattle in the P. G. Johnson.  House of Grace, like the top pick, has the right running style for this race.
The beautifully-bred HATHEER looked good winning her maiden at this trip for the always-dangerous Kiaran McLaughlin.  Two horses have returned from that race to win including runner-up Dad's Crazy, who scored in the off-the-turf Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont with a 69 Beyer Speed Figure.  Hatheer has been up close to the leaders in both starts, and may need to relax with other speeds likely to set good fractions.
JONMIL'S EDGE finished evenly for third in the Presque Isle Downs Debutante, and she worked a bullet five furlongs around the dogs here on October 8.  She is likely to be one of the speed horses, and a duel could doom her to a minor award.
CANADIAN STORM is by an underrated turf sire, and she looked good rallying into solid fractions to post the 21-1 upset in her career debut at Philadelphia Park.  These are tougher.
DREAMINOFJOSEPHINE stretches out off a gate-to-wire score at Arlington, and is likely to be involved in the pace after breaking from the rail.  LISA'S KITTEN finished behind Smart Seattle in the P. G. Johnson, and is mired in the far outside starting stall.  AVY BABY takes a steep step up in class after winning her turf debut for a $30,000 tag.  WHYDAH can't be counted out as Todd Pletcher has been on quite the roll lately.  Whydah will need a Beyer boost off that 60 maiden win, however.  WAYNETTA finished 10 1/2 lengths behind House of Grace two back at Saratoga, and may be compromised by a hot pace up front.  POORTOWN PRINCESS is a maiden in very, very tough.  OSCAR DE LA THORN is the only multi-race winner, but he's yet to race beyond six furlongs, and this is his turf debut.
