Kaufman, creator of Tomlinson ratings, dies

Art Kaufman, who developed the Tomlinson pedigree ratings as a handicapping tool under the name Lee Tomlinson, died on Sunday at age 73 in New York. Kaufman had cancer.

Kaufman first published his Tomlinson ratings in 1986 in "Mudders and Turfers." The three-digit ratings purported to gauge a sire's ability to pass turf or wet-track ability to his offspring. Later, the ratings were expanded to include staying and sprinting ability and were published in "Tomlinson's Comprehensive Guide."

Daily Racing Form became the exclusive publisher of the Tomlinson Ratings in 2001.

Kaufman, who was born in the Bronx in New York City, is survived by his wife, Jackie, two daughters, and five grandchildren.

Donations in remembrance of Kaufman may be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY, 10065.
