Kate's Main Man holds on in Cyclones

ALTOONA, Iowa - Kate's Main Man held off the determined charge of Tiger Lake to win the $75,000 Cyclones, a handicap for older Iowa-bred males, by a head on Saturday at Prairie Meadows.

Kate's Main Man ($16.60) cleared from the outside post in the field of nine and went to the lead with 2-1 favorite Frozen Angel, who was quickly pulled up after taking a bad step entering the first turn. Racing in the two path, Kate's Main Man set early fractions of 23.64 seconds, 47.82, and 1:11.90. He quickened his pace on the far turn and dispatched early challenger Cainam. .

Tiger Lake tracked just off the pace along the rail until the top of the lane He rallied three wide and engaged in a lengthy stretch battle with the front-runner. Kate's Main Man just held on throughout the stretch under Alex Birzer's left-handed stick and finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.84. Little Chief closed from far back early to finish third, beaten 10.5 lengths.

Kate's Main, owned by Randy Patterson, has won 9 of 34 starts $315,261. He will likely be pointed towards the $85,000 Ralph Hayes at Prairie Meadows on Aug. 7.
