Karis Makaw wins Boeing Handicap

AUBURN, Wash. - Karis Makaw stretched her winning streak to three with a 3-4 length victory over Canadian invader Summer Symphony in Saturday's $40,000 Boeing Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1-16 miles.

Under Ricky Frazier, who was notching the third of four wins on the card, the 4-year-old Karis Makaw stalked the pace of Relaxing Green while racing three wide, moved to the front at the top of the stretch and turned back a determined late bid from Summer Symphony to win in 1:42.60.

Karis Makaw, a daughter of Charismatic who races for Evelyn Filler, paid $5.20 as the solid favorite and improved her record to five wins from 10 starts for trainer Bob Meeking.

In Saturday's six furlong Emerald Express for 2-year-olds, Tusko. T. outfinished stablemate Courting Seattle to win by 3-4 lengths in 1:09.60. Both horses are trained by Howard Belvoir.

Tusko T., a You and I gelding who races for breeder Al Benton, came from just off the pace to collar his stablemate at midstretch and gradually inched away under rider Juan Gutierrez. Tusko T. paid $7.00 to win as the second choice in the wagering to the even money Courting Seattle and earned $24,650 from a purse of $43,650.
