Karakorum Starlet holds on

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - A gutsy Karakorum Starlet ($5.30) shook off two stern challengers to record a half-length victory in Sunday's $80,400 Broadway Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

After putting away a pace challenge from Tamberino at the five-sixteenths pole, Karkorum Starlet was confronted by Wishing Wishes at the quarter pole. Karakorum Starlet, under Stewart Elliott, held Wishing Wishes, to whom she was spotting five pounds, at bay through the stretch to get the victory, her third straight against New York-breds.

Wishing Wishes held second by a head over a late-running Scatkey.

Karakorum Starlet, a 5-year-old daughter of Skip Away owned by Karakorum Farm and trained by Jeff Odintz, covered six furlongs in 1:11.87.

"She tries hard and puts herself right in the race,'' Elliott said. "She broke great and she was right where she was supposed to be. It was all a question of whether she could hold them off at the end and she did.''
