Florida-based stallion Kantharos will relocate to stand at Ocala Stud for the 2013 breeding season. A 4-year-old by Lion Heart, Kantharos previously stood at Vinery Florida for $5,000. His fee for 2013 will be announced at a later date.

Purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $250,000 at the 2010 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March 2-year-olds in training sale, Kantharos emerged as one of the top juveniles in training during the summer, stringing together three consecutive wins by open lengths to start his career including victories in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes and the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes. He was retired in August by Stonestreet after suffering a non-life-threatening leg injury, earning $185,213 in an abbreviated career.

Kantharos is out of the winning Southern Halo mare Contessa Halo and is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Ikigai and stakes winner Bonifacio. His first foals are weanlings this year.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to add an exciting young stallion prospect like Kantharos to our roster,” Ocala Stud president J. Michael O’Farrell Jr. said. “I think everybody understands how dominant and precocious of a racehorse he was as well as how physically good looking of a stallion he is. . . . We have a couple of his first weanlings here on the farm, and they’re outstanding individuals, and we’re hearing great things around town about his babies. It’s always a good sign to see a stallion stamping them like he is.”
