Kamsin takes German Derby


Kamsin returned to form just in time to capture the $840,000 German Derby at Hamburg on Sunday as he thundered to a three-length victory over longshot Ostland.

Kamsin, trained by Peter Schiergen, scored at 6-1 after having failed as the favorite in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic last time. He gave rider Andrasch Starke his fifth German Derby triumph. Schiergen also saddled the the 17-1 runner-up.

British invader Top Lock was up for third, with the 5-2 favorite, Liang Kay, fourth. The Aidan O’Brien-trained King of Rome finished sixth while the Bavarian Classic winner Walzertraum came home a dull 15th. The time for the 1 1/2 miles on good ground was 2:39.29.

* Two track records were set at Maisons-Laffitte on Sunday when the Paul Cole-trained Percolator won the five-furlong, Group 3 Prix du Bois for 2-year-olds in 57 seconds flat, and the Freddie Head-trained Goldikova, second in the French 1000 Guineas, took the Group 3 Prix Chloe, getting the straight mile in 1:34.90.
