Kafwain filly sells for $200,000 at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company sale

A $200,000 Kafwain filly led selling Monday as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s April 2-year-old auction got under way in Ocala, Fla.

The opening session had sold four horses for $100,000 or more by 3 p.m, including the session-leading Kafwain daughter. Grace Stables purchased her. Eddie Woods, agent, consigned the dark bay or brown filly out of Seattle Splash. The filly breezed a quarter-mile in 21 seconds at the under-tack show last week and is from the family of Grade 3-placed stakes winners Splasha and Grand Splash.

The session-leading filly last sold as a yearling at the OBS 2010 August yearling sale, where Quarter Pole Enterprises bought her for $31,000.

A pair of $150,000 colts were the next highest prices at 3 p.m. Hidden Brook, agent, spent that for a Trippi colt who is a half-brother to two-time Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent. That filly most recently put in a dominant performance in Sunday’s Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland, winning by five lengths. Her Trippi half-brother was in the OBS catalog as Hip No. 59 in Ocala Stud’s consignment. He worked a quarter in 21.2 seconds at the under-tack preview. His dam is the unraced Forestry mare Roger’s Sue.

Lane’s End Bloodstock also paid $150,000 for Hip No. 111, a colt by Sharp Humor, whose first foals are 3-year-olds this season. James Layden Sr., acting as agent, consigned the chestnut colt. Hip No. 111 is out of the El Gran Senor mare Senorita Spike and is a half-brother to the two-time Grade 3-placed filly Tap Tap Tapping. The Sharp Humor colt sold last year for $25,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s October yearling sale in Kentucky, where Layden, as agent, bought him.

The Monday session’s other six-figure horse at that time was Hip No. 92, a $120,000 Hook and Ladder filly that bloodstock agent Steve Shahinian bought on behalf of Harvey Clarke. The daughter of Savasana, by Scatmandu, breezed a quarter in the under-tack session’s second fastest time, 20.6 seconds. Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables consigned Hip No. 92, who hails from the family of graded winner Bodacious Tatas. The bay filly last went through the ring at the OBS August yearling sale, where she failed to reach her reserve on a $9,500 final bid.

The OBS April auction was to continue through April 21 at the OBS facility in Ocala. Sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. daily.
