Kabeeb takes Princess Elizabeth Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Kabeeb, from the first crop of 1998 Woodbine Mile winner Labeeb, won her maiden in a lucrative way on Sunday at Woodbine, taking the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes in game fashion under Jim McAleney.

Kabeeb, part of the favored Roger Attfield-trained entry with Clair de Lune and Speak Out, stalked the pace set by the latter, who got the half-mile split in :48.58 seconds. Kabeeb took control entering the stretch, as Mountain Dawn was closing along the rail, and she held that rival at bay to score by a half-length.

Santerra finished a distant third, after getting hung out five-wide on the clubhouse turn. Clair de Lune, Speak Out, Arch of Triumph, Promenade Road and Asmokeafterdinner completed the order of finish. The final time was 1:49.49.

"We had an excellent trip," said McAleney. "We wound up sitting behind the other part of the entry (Speak Out). It opened up at the head of the stretch, and I had the horse to kick on. She's still a little green, and I think she's going to really improve off this race."

The entry returned $3.80 to win, and Kabeeb banked $150,000 for a partnership which included Attfield.
