K P Wildcat wins Chaves County Stakes

K P Wildcat rallied through the stretch to win the $50,000 Chaves County Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths over Minster’sadventure on Monday at Zia Park. K P Wildcat was returning to both the main track and New Mexico after a start on turf at Del Mar.

The Chaves County was a one-mile race for fillies and mares. It was the first of four Monday stakes for Thoroughbreds planned for October at Zia.

K P Wildcat ($5.40) settled well off the pace set by Exposure, who took the field through fractions of 24.18 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.12 for the half-mile, and 1:11.20 for six furlongs. Minster’sadventure took over in the stretch but ultimately was unable to fend off the late-running K P Wildcat, who covered the distance on a fast track in 1:37.55.

Roimes Chirinos was aboard K P Wildcat, who was his fourth winner on the card.

Weston Martin trains K P Wildcat for Karl Pergola. The win was the fourth from six career starts for the filly, who has now earned $126,005. She is a daughter of Include.

Earlier on the card, the multiple stakes winner Bryn’s Fancy Pants improved her career record to 5 for 5 in an allowance designed to produce starters for the upcoming New Mexico Cup.
