Just a Way, the winner of the Dubai Duty Free at Meydan Racecourse in March, was named the world’s best racehorse of 2014 by a panel of experts in a ceremony in London on Tuesday.

Just a Way was given a rating of 130, one point higher than Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia. The remainder of the 10 runners consisted of five European-based horses and one each from the United States, Asia, and South Africa.

The highest-rated American horse was Bayern, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November who was ranked in a tie for ninth at 125 with the European 3-year-old Sea the Moon. There was a five-way tie for third between Australia, Kingman, and The Grey Gatsby of Europe, Variety Club of South Africa, and Able Friend of Hong Kong, all at 127,and one point ahead of Prix de’l Arc de Triomphe winner Treve.

The Americans California Chrome, Game On Dude, Main Sequence, and Wise Dan were part of a group of seven horses rated at 124.

Just a Way, a 5-year-old horse in 2014, had one other win last year – the Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen in Japan in June. He lost his final three starts, finishing seventh in the Arc de Triomphe, second in the Japan Cup, and fourth in the Arima Kinen.

But Just a Way’s convincing win in the Dubai Duty Free at 1 1/8 miles on turf was enough to convince the panel to place him atop the list.
