Junior College takes Don Bernhardt

Junior College wins the $50,000 Don Bernhardt Stakes at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Junior College schooled the opposition in the $50,000 Don Bernhardt Stakes at Ellis Park Saturday, winning by 3 1/4 lengths over favored Monkey Hill in track record time.

In contention from the start, Junior College ($13.60) engaged in a three-horse duel early with Monkey Hill and Killenaule and had little trouble dispatching those foes at the top of the stretch. When given his cue from jockey Jesus Castanon after a half-mile in 45.54 seconds, he accelerated away from the field to complete 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.56 over a blazing-fast Ellis Park main track.

It was the fourth track record of meet, which began July 19.

Although the Bernhardt was his first stakes start, his inexperience never showed. A 4-year-old gelded son of Ide, he ran professionally and had little trouble passing this class test. The win pushed his record to four for eight for owner Mjaka Stables and trainer Tony Reinstedler.

Monkey Hill, the even-money choice, narrowly held second in the stretch. He finished a neck in front of Just See James, who beat Cowboy Hardware in a photo for third money.

Greater Good, the second choice at 5-2 odds, was dull throughout and finished last of seven. Long Range Missile was scratched.
