Junior College best in Governor's

Junior College became just the fourth horse in Ellis Park history to sweep the track's two biggest stakes for handicap runners when he cruised to victory as the heavy favorite Saturday in the $50,000 Governor's Handicap.

Ridden by Jesus Castanon, Junior College led all the way when finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Esprit du Roi in the one-mile Governor's. The winner paid $3 after finishing in 1:35.14.

Three early scratches reduced the field to five. Huntin Gene, who raced closest to Junior College for most of the way before yielding late, finished third, followed by Go Now and Cowboy Hardware.

Bred and owned by the Mjaka Stables and trained by Tony Reinstedler, Junior College also won the Don Bernhardt Stakes earlier in the Ellis meet. Since the Bernhardt and Governor's were inaugurated at the Henderson, Ky., track in 1970, three other horses had captured both races: Jim Dan Bob in 1976, High Stakes Player in 1998, and Dash for Daylight in 2002.
