Jump racing and betting

For those who enjoy parimutuel betting with their steeplechase racing, Fair Hill, Md., is the place to be Monday. The National Steeplechase Association will run nine races there on Memorial Day - six over jumps and three on the flat - and for the only time all year will offer parimutuel wagering.

About 15,000 people are expected to enjoy the races at picnic tables and bleacher seats, and handle will probably reach around $200,000.

Post time at Fair Hill, located in northeastern Maryland, is 1 p.m.

The feature on the day is the $30,000 Valentine Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares.

Maryland-based horseman Jeremy Gillam owns and trains Valentine favorite Almost There, winner of a $30,000 stakes at Nashville on May 8. The 8-year-old Almost There has run in four hurdle races for fillies and mares and won two of them. Xavier Aizpuru, on board for the Nashville win, gets a return call.

Footlights and Classic Gale, who were second and third at Nashville, take another shot at Almost There.
