Juliet Capulet by a head in Rockfel Stakes

This could be a good weekend for English trainer John Gosden. It certainly has started that way.

On Friday at Newmarket Racecourse, Juliet Capulet (9-1) edged 2-1 favorite Nyaleti by a head in the Group 2, $146,000 Rockfel Stakes over seven furlongs. On Sunday at Chantilly Racecourse in France, the Gosden-trained Enable is favored in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s top race.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Juliet Capulet was always near the front and held off a late threat from Nyaleti for the narrow win. Gavota, who raced in traffic with a furlong remaining, finishing third, beaten 1 3/4 lengths.

Juliet Capulet earned a fees-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3. After the race, Gosden indicated that Juliet Capulet is more likely to stay in races at six or seven furlongs and might not start again this year.

Nyaleti is a candidate for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The well-named Juliet Capulet (Dark Angel-Capulet Monteque, by Camacho) has won 2 of 6 starts for Cheveley Park Stud. She beat maidens in her fourth start at Thirsk on July 28 and was second in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at seven furlongs at Newmarket in August.
