JRHA releases catalogs for select July sale

The Japan Racing Horse Association has released the catalog for its select July sale of yearlings and foals. The JRHA has cataloged 261 yearlings and 229 foals for the sale, which is scheduled for July 8-9 at the Northern Horse Park on the island of Hokkaido.

Japanese Horse of the Year and leading sire Deep Impact has 13 yearlings and 17 foals cataloged in the sale. Deep Impact sired the most expensive horses in both categories at last year’s auction, with both selling for 250 million yen, or about $2.4 million. The 2012 July sale posted increases in gross and average for both the yearling and foal sessions, and the sale saw combined receipts rise to over 10 billion yen (about $97.5 million) for the first time since 2007.

Other sires represented in the sale include Empire Maker, who relocated to Japan in fall 2010; Daiwa Major; and Heart’s Cry. Offspring from first-crop sires in the foal sale include 2010 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce and 2011 Dubai World Cup winner Victoire Pisa.

U.S.-based sires with offerings at the sale include Giant’s Causeway, who is represented by a yearling colt out of the Tapit mare Star of Sapphire. The mare is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Zazu and Grade 2 winner Flashback. Tapit also has a yearling at the sale who is out of a Group 2-placed half-sister to Star of Sapphire.

In the foal session, Bernardini is represented by a weanling filly out of Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan winner Peyton d’Oro; and Big Brown has a colt out of Singing Sensation, a half-sister to Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes winner Ruby’s Reception.
