Jockey strategy key for 'Joey'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Favour for Joey and Golden Mark look like the ones to beat in a $35,000 optional race at 6 1/2 furlongs that drew six horses and goes as the seventh race at Hastings Sunday.

Favour for Joey and Golden Mark met in a $35,000 optional sprint June 12 and probably compromised each other's chances when they hooked up right out of the gate. Favour for Joey won the early battle but it probably cost him the win as he tired to finish second to a fast-closing Neverbroke. Golden Mark faded to eighth.

It's possible that jockey Pedro Alvarado will adopt different tactics on Favour for Joey in Sunday's race. After all, when Favour for Joey beat Golden Mark by a head in a $25,000 claiming race April 23, Alvarado kept Favour for Joey in a stalking position for most of the race. Favour for Joey, who is trained by Felimon Alvarado, figures to be the heavy favorite in the race.

It could be dangerous to let Golden Mark get away on his own. He followed up his second to Favour for Joey with a front-winning win in a $25,000 claiming sprint over Slew's Carousel and Neverbroke, both of whom came right back to win their next start. Golden Mark is trained by leading trainer Dino Condilenios and will be ridden by Frank Fuentes.

Daring Mood, who is trained by Peter Stephen, also brings some speed to the table. Daring Mood was involved early in the Neverbroke race and he held on well to finish a close fourth.
