Jockey dies at Beulah Park

GROVE CITY, Ohio- Closing weekend of the Fall meeting at Beulah Park was marred by a horrific three horse spill which killed one rider and sent another to the hospital.

The incident took place when Winds of Sonora ridden by apprentice Arnold Ruiz broke down in midstretch of the third race, both My Martina, ridden by Mike Heath, and Kaicoltra ridden by Chuck Costanzo, fell over their fallen rival.

Kaicoltra appeared to step on Ruiz's back as she went down.

Medical personnel tried to revive Ruiz on the track for over 20 minutes after which he was transported via life flight to Grant Hospital.

Ruiz, a 33-year-old native of Illinois, was reportedly dead on arrival at Grant after suffering massive internal injuries.

Costanzo was transported via ambulance to Grant Hospital. He reportedly was drifting in and out of consciousness and had no feeling below his waist while being attended to on the track. Heath escaped the spill uninjured.

Racing at Beulah was canceled following the afternoon's fifth race while the remainder of the 7 & 7 program was completed at Thistledown.
