Grade 1 winner Jimmy Creed has been retired to stand at Spendthrift.

Grade 1 winner Jimmy Creed has been retired due to a minor sesamoidean ligament injury in his right front ankle, and will stand the 2014 breeding season at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky. for an advertised fee of $12,500.

The 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor will be offered in limited quantity through the farm’s “Share the Upside” program at a fee of $13,500. Through the program, breeders may earn a lifetime breeding right to Jimmy Creed by sending a mare to the stallion in his first two seasons, producing a foal both times, and paying the stud fee, among other conditions.

Jimmy Creed regularly competed against the best of the West Coast’s sprint division, capping off his sophomore campaign with a win in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes for Spendthrift and trainer Richard Mandella. He followed up in 2013 by winning the Grade 2 Portero Grande Stakes and finishing third in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes.

With the recovery time for Jimmy Creed’s injury projected to keep him out of action past this year’s Breeders’ Cup, the decision was made to retire him to stud. Jimmy Creed retires with four wins in 10 career starts for earnings of $439,250.

“We were hopeful that we could bring Jimmy Creed home to stud after the Breeders’ Cup because the entire team was very excited about his chances in the Sprint, but it wasn’t meant to be,” said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm. “The great news is that we’re going to be able to offer breeders what we believe is a tremendous opportunity to breed to an exciting stallion prospect through our Share the Upside program.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Jimmy Creed is out of the Grade 1-winning Citidancer mare Hookedonthefeelin, who is the dam of five winners from six foals to race, including Grade 1 winner Pussycat Doll and stakes winner Funny Feeling.

A $900,000 purchase out of the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale, Jimmy Creed is from the family of Grade 1 winner Midnight Lucky.
