Jiffenersey may face pace battle

It took a couple of days to get it done, but racing secretary Jason Teague managed to put together eight races at Northlands Park on Sunday.

A six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares running for a top claiming price of $10,000 drew eight horses and will serve as the featured seventh race.

Jiffenersey, trained by Red Smith, looks like the one they will have to catch. She is coming off of a second-place finish in a $15,000 claiming race at 3 1/2 furlongs on May 22. In her previous start, she scored a front-running win for $8,000, also at 3 1/2 furlongs. She closed 2009 with a win over Classy Prospect in a $7,000 conditional claiming race last October

There is other speed in the field, however. If a duel does develop, it could set up nicely for Littlebitofrouge. In her last start, she came from off the pace to win a $5,000 claiming race on May 28. She was claimed out of the race by trainer Jim Meyaard, who over the past five years has won with 38 percent of the horses he has brought back for their first start after being claimed.

Trainer Dale Saunders has entered Pretty and I Lost My Halo. They will run coupled in the wagering.

Pretty drew the rail, where she should put her good speed to use.
