Jess Good Candy remains undefeated in Ruidoso Derby


Jess Good Candy remained undefeated in seven starts on Saturday, when the Quarter Horse champion dominated the $1,068,631 Ruidoso Derby. He won by 1 3/4 lengths over fastest qualifier Volcom Bay.

The race was the first major 3-year-old stakes of the season at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Jess Good Candy won last year’s All American Futurity at the track en route to being voted both champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old colt by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Jess Good Candy on Saturday broke with the field from post 10, drifted out in the early stages, then straightened up and rolled home. He covered 400 yards on a track rated fast in 19.47 seconds. Jess Good Candy paid $3.20.

Ivan Carnero rode Jess Good Candy for trainer Clinton Crawford.

Crawford said before the Ruidoso Derby that the primary objective for Jess Good Candy this meet is the $2.5 million All American Derby in September.
