Logotype, a 33-1 outsider, held off a late threat from the 3-10 favorite Codino to win Sunday’s $1.832 million Asahi Hai Futurity at Nakayama Racecourse, Japan’s top race for 2-year-olds.

Ridden by Mirco Demuro, Logotype won his first Grade 1 race in the Asahi Hai Futurity, which was run over about a mile. Logotype stalked the early pace on the right-handed course, took the lead in early stretch, and was fully extended to win by a neck.

Codino, a two-time stakes winner who was unbeaten in three starts before Sunday’s race, finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of 14-1 Gottfrield.

A Shin Top, a previously undefeated Kentucky-bred colt by Tale of the Cat, could only finish eighth in the field of 16.

Logotype races for prominent Japanese owner-breeder Teruya Yoshida and is trained by former jump jockey Tsuyoshi Tanaka.

Logotype is by Lohengrin, a stallion by Singspiel. Logotype has won 3 of 6 starts. Sunday’s race was his first stakes win. He was fourth behind Codino in the Sapporo Nisai Stakes on Sept. 1, and later won an allowance race as a prep to Sunday’s race.
