Jackpot leads $4M Delta parade

The $1 million Delta Jackpot on Dec. 4 will be the richest of 46 stakes worth a cumulative $4 million during the upcoming Thoroughbred meet at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. The track will run 101 days, from Oct. 1 to April 2, 2005.

Purses during the meet will average $175,000 a card, said Chris Warren, director of racing at Delta. An additional 15 race dates have been added to the meet at the request of horsemen, he said. Last year during the 86-night meet, daily purses averaged $194,000.

The Delta Jackpot, a 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds, will again share a card with the $250,000 Delta Princess for 2-year-old fillies. The open-company races will be supported by two other $75,000 races, and first post is set at 3 p.m. Central.

Other stakes of note include the $200,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship, a 1 1/16-mile race for Louisiana-breds that tops a program of 10 stakes restricted to horses bred in Louisiana on Feb. 5. Also, Breeders' Cup funds have been added to two stakes: the $125,000 Gulf Coast Breeders' Cup Classic on April 2, and the $100,000 Goddess Breeders' Cup on April 1.

Stall applications are due Aug. 20. Early bird nominations for the Delta Jackpot close on Sept. 24.
