Izzy Rules eyes third straight

Trainer Jeff Bonde felt good Wednesday morning when he entered the stakes winner Izzy Rules in Saturday's $50,000 CARF Debutante at the California Association of Racing Fairs meet at Golden Gate Fields. He wasn't feeling as good after watching the first day of racing at the meet on Wednesday.

Izzy Rules has never been headed in two starts. She followed a July 2 Pleasanton maiden victory with a one-length score in the Juan Gonzalez on the dirt there nine days later. But Bonde is worried that the slow-playing Tapeta at Golden Gate will compromise Izzy Rules in the six-furlong Debutante.

Three races for 2-year-olds on Wednesday were clocked in 1:14.87 and 1:14.18 for six furlongs and 1:07.54 for 5 1/2 furlongs. All were claiming races. The fastest six furlongs of opening day was still a relatively slow 1:11.76 in a straight maiden race for 3-year-olds and up.

"That racetrack was just too loose today," Bonde said on Wednesday.

Bonde called the field for the Debutante "small but select." Unbridled Meeting set the pace before finishing third in the $100,000 CTBA Stakes at Del Mar on July 24. She won her maiden on June 4 at Hollywood Park. Ballistic Sue makes her first start since a strong graduation score on June 18 at Hollywood Park. Debut winners Precious Song and Skirt and a Tie are also entered. Got an Itch, second all the way behind Izzy Rules in the Juan Gonzalez, rounds out the field.

Izzy Rules has had three works since her last win at Pleasanton. Bonde didn't work Izzy Rules until 12 days after her stakes win and then for only three furlongs. She has since turned in a pair of five-furlong works at Pleasanton as Bonde has tried to keep her on a similar training pattern as before her first two victories.

"The big thing is to make sure they bounce back all right," he said.

Izzy Rules defeated Got an Itch by a length in the Juan Gonzalez, and Bonde said he was impressed by Izzy Rules's gameness.

"They both went too fast early," he said.

Only Got an Itch has raced over Golden Gate's Tapeta surface. She and Skirt and a Tie both train over the track.
