It's all business for Lost in the Fog

Lost in the Fog, galloping at Calder on Thursday, will try to run his record to 8 for 8 in Saturday's Carry Back.

MIAMI - Lost in the Fog will be the shortest priced favorite in Saturday's Summit of Speed program at Calder, and rightly so. But despite the obvious speed and class advantages Lost in the Fog holds over five seemingly overmatched rivals in the $300,000 Carry Back Stakes, his trainer, Greg Gilchrist, said he is not taking anything for granted.

"I don't ever look at any race being easy," said Gilchrist. "I never underestimate the opposition."

will be the marquee name on Saturday's sixth annual Summit of Speed card, which features eight stakes races, four of which are graded, worth $1.9 million in purses. The Carry Back is carded as the 12th of 13 events on the afternoon and will complete an all-stakes pick five wager that also consists of the Grade 3, $300,000 Azalea Stakes; the Grade 2, $500,000 Smile Sprint Handicap; the $100,000 Calder Turf Sprint Handicap; and the Grade 2, $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap. The pick five offers a guaranteed pool of $500,000.

Aside from Afleet Alex, no member of this year's 3-year-old division has captured the public's attention like Lost in the Fog. He has won all seven of his starts, the first six of which came by margins ranging from 4 1/4 to 14 3/4 lengths. He earned triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in each of those seven races and displayed not only his pure speed but a big heart when turning back several challenges to defeat Egg Head by 1 1/4 lengths in Belmont's Grade 2 Riva Ridge Breeders' Cup, a seven-furlong race on Belmont Stakes Day.

Based in northern California, Lost in the Fog will be making his third start in Florida on Saturday, and his fifth cross-country trip. Owned by Harry Aleo, he began his 3-year-old campaign with easy wins in the Sunshine Millions Dash and the Grade 2 Swale, both at Gulfstream Park.

"What amazes me about this horse is not only his running ability, but the way he's handled all the shipping," said Gilchrist. "He's really held his weight extremely well despite the demanding schedule, and not many horses can do that. In fact he probably bounced back out of his last race quicker than he did any of his previous races."

Lost in the Fog will be the co-highweight at 122 pounds under the allowance conditions of the Carry Back, but he has carried more weight in each of his last three outings. Russell Baze, who was aboard Lost in the Fog for each of his first six starts before missing the Riva Ridge because of a fractured collarbone, will be back in the irons Saturday.

will also carry 122 pounds due to stakes wins here a year ago in the Affirmed and Foolish Pleasure Stakes. He returned from an eight-month layoff with a big effort, a second-place finish behind Dazzling Dr. Cevin in the Valid Video Stakes on June 19.

is also entered for the Carry Back, along with locals Hot Space and Qureall. Crawfish King, the only other horse to ship in for the race besides Lost in the Fog, rounds out the lineup.

The most interesting member of the lineup may be Hot Space, a promising son of Lord Carson who earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure winning his career debut here June 14. Hot Space subsequently returned to work five furlongs from the gate with his Grade 1-winning stablemate Silver Wagon, during which he matched strides with Silver Wagon throughout in 1:00.60.

"The biggest upset on Saturday will be when Hot Space beats Lost in the Fog," said Ralph Ziadie, who trains Hot Space for the Buckram Oak Farm. "Obviously Lost in the Fog will be very tough to beat, but I'm just hoping having him ship in from California to run over this track might help me a little. And running second to a horse of that caliber at this stage of our colt's career wouldn't be that bad either."
