Italy: Real Solution, a Ramsey homebred, favored in Italian Derby

Real Solution, an undefeated colt owned by American breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey, risks a three-race unbeaten streak in Sunday’s Group 2 Italian Derby at Capannelle Racecourse.

Real Solution, a Pennsylvania-bred by Kitten’s Joy, will be ridden for the first time by Frankie Dettori in the Italian Derby, which is run over a mile and three furlongs.

Trained by Gianluca Bietolini, Real Solution is already a stakes winner at Capannelle this year, winning the listed Premio Botticelli over about 1 5/16 miles on April 29. He won that race as a 1-5 shot by five lengths over Texidor, who is part of the 11-runner Italian Derby field.

The presence of Dettori, who won the Italian Derby most recently on Mastery in 2009, will make Real Solution an even stronger favorite on Sunday.

Vola E Va and Wild Wolf, third and fourth in the Premio Botticelli, are also entered in the Italian Derby. Vola E Va was third in the listed Premio Emanuele Filiberto over 1 1/4 miles at San Siro on April 22. The runner-up in that field, Smoking Joe, starts in the Italian Derby.

The Italian Derby field includes a German shipper in Feuerblitz, who was second in the listed Derby Trial at Hanover on April 29, and a French invader in Herrbuga, who is seeking his first stakes win.
