Iroquois: Seeking the Ante prevails

Despite struggling with the wet racetrack early on, Seeking the Ante's class prevailed as the graded stakes winner rallied four wide and ran past Travelator and Slew Motion inside the final furlong to win the $125,000 by 3 1/2 lengths.

Travelator, who likely ran the final race of her career, finished second, 2 1/4 lengths ahead of longshot Star Celebrity.

Mike Luzzi rode Seeking the Ante, filling in for Richard Migliore, who broke his left leg in a paddock accident on Thursday.

Seeking the Ante, who won the Grade 2 Nassau County here in the spring, was 10th of 12 early on and appeared to be spinning her wheels behind a half-mile run in 45.31 seconds. Around the turn, Seeking the Ante picked it up but still had a ton of ground to make up on a surface that had been favoring front-runners. She advanced four wide into the stretch and rallied well down the stretch to get up. Seeking the Ante, owned by Chester and Mary Broman, covered the seven furlongs in 1:25.40 and returned $6.30 as the favorite.

"[Luzzi] said he had to tap her a few times down the backside; she was falling back," Kimmel said. "Finally, going around the turn she grabbed a hold of him and she made a good run. The fractions were fast enough where you figured they've got to back up. Nobody was winning from too far out today, so I was getting a little nervous."
